More Flavor: Discussion Bikes, Cars, and the Limits of "Automobility"

High gas prices and a sagging economy may have moved commuters from their cars to the city's packed trains and their own bikes, but traffic and public-transportation schedules still limit our daily travel. Tonight's discussion considers the far-reaching effects of our wheel-centered culture. The cycling community's historical connection with radical political views and environmentalism also comes under scrutiny. Discussion leader Zack Furness — Columbia College Chicago professor and author of the forthcoming book One Less Car: Bike Culture and the Politics of Cycling — questions whether cycling's counterculture is really the answer to our nation's mobility problems.
