Performing Arts: Theatre Woyzeck

Iceland's art is nothing if not distinctive. Our Nordic (sort of) neighbors are represented at BAM's Next Wave Festival with a wildly staged, radically designed interpretation of German playwright Georg Büchner's Woyzeck, widely regarded as the first modern drama. Director Gísli Örn Gardarsson's production plays out on an industrial set of Astroturf, metal pipes, and water-filled Plexiglas tanks — the last used for underwater sequences. Woyzeck's nightmarish story turns hyper-physical with acrobatics and aerial ballets, but remains emotionally wrought, especially because of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' hypnotic score.
