Performing Arts: Theatre Adding Machine

After 25 years of tedious number crunching, Mr. Zero finds out that he is being replaced by an adding machine. Driven by rage — and his spouse's nagging — he murders his boss and lands on death row. Based on Elmer Rice's provocative 1923 expressionist play, Adding Machine is driven by desperate characters and bleak dialogue — and, somehow, it's a musical. A stylish, minimalist score frames deliberate, repetitive lyrics that add a contemporary element to the somewhat dated subject matter. The play's second half takes place in a dreamily designed afterlife, adding a touch of hope to the grim tale.
